Ralph commented on ARIELA LOPES's blog post HOW CAN IT BE??
"You are right of course, but some of our use of words (in English anyway) like "meat" and "milk" dates back into the mists of time! In English for example we have "mincemeat" which can either be a spicy mixture of…"

Ralph replied to Mariel Orozco's discussion What does a vegan do for living? What do you do?
"I'm an archaeologist and writer. No problem being vegan in either occupation, although I have to be careful nevertheless -  animal products creep surrepticiously into almost any walk of life! Good luck!"

Growing

The sun feels warm at last and I can wear shorts without shivering! Life amongst the vegetables is busy, and I'm suffering from attacks by mice, which are eating my pea, bean, sunflower and zucchini (courgettes) seedlings. Grrr! But most of my seed potatoes are now planted, and the early leaves are appearing. This year I'm growing melons and grapes for the first time - have no idea if I'll get any fruit but we'll see. Otherwise all the usual crops are germinating happily. The pond is full of…See More

Spring

This year, in Nottingham, winter is slow to depart. That's frustrating, because the growing season is short enough in Britain, and my vegetables and I need sunshine! So far this year I've sown kale, carrots, spring onions, courgettes, aubergines, broccoli, turnips, cucumber, melon, peas, cauliflower, tomatoes, peppers, dill, parsley, terragon, sweetcorn, broad beans, wax beans, sunflowers and French beans. One lot of cucumber seedlings died, and the wax beans haven't germinated. Grrr! The peas…See More

Valuing vegetables!

I'm a freelance writer, archaeologist and mad keen photographer and musician (I play the oboe, tin whistle and bodhran. I'm hoping to start studying for a PhD in historical archaeology in October.

I've been a vegan for 16 years or so. I grow much of my own food and am self-sufficient in potatoes, beans, onions, garlic, Jerusalem artichokes and whatever else survives my lack of horticultural expertise.

Before I did photography, but now I use my creativity to do lightwork.

Love to read your gardenjournal. Good compost smells to forests.
