Comment by Lukas Cech on March 21, 2012 at 9:17am Hey guys, here's a vote from Slovakia!
Have you ever considered joining up with other groups (not necessarily political) with the same ideas internationally? In unity (and numbers) is power :)
There's human involvement in anything bad happening to this planet, one big part of the problem is overpopulation. But the trouble is that slowing down the population boom (through whatever means, education or castration) won't change our bad habits, which are the main problem of western culture - consumerism, no regard for other beings or this planet, just short sighted personal race after wealth and personal benefits.
I am going to compare animal welfare struggle that we're a part of to the tobacco industry. (yep, weird comparison, keep reading).
Some time ago, cigarettes were accepted anywhere, no one cared whether you smoked in a hospital or school, no one cared about the health implications - but tobacco manufacturers knew all that from the beginning. They just didn't have to tell us.
Nowadays, smoking isn't seen in such good light - it's now considered anti-social, unhealthy etc and people generally don't like it.
What's changed? the guys who produce it were forced to tell us what's happening behind the curtains (the cancerous pictures on each packet you buy, the big letters "SMOKING CAUSES DEATH" etc changed peoples opinion.
Now replace the tobacco industry with the meat industry (or any other animal exploiting industry). Vast majority of people don't know how bad the conditions are for these animals, they only see the nice piece of prepared ham on the shelf in a supermarket.
Would they still buy that ham if it had a picture of a pig hanging upside down bleeding to death? Some would, but vast majority wouldn't.
So maybe there's some success we can get by pushing the meat industry towards a change like happened in the tobacco industry. Get them to either show how meat is prepared - before it's nicely packaged. And impose stronger laws around animal welfare in those industries.
However, we should be realistic about it too - tobacco was harming humans, therefore it was easier to get all those nasty pictures to appear on the packets. But meat consumption doesn't harm humans and many humans will never stop eating meat, even if they know how it's prepared.
Another thing is that although humanity will always continue eating meat (in general, not everyone), there should be a higher price on it. Meat used to be a special meal (when people had their own animals or had to hunt), but now we kill so many animals that meat is everywhere and humans consume more meat now than ever before, because it's so easy to get.
If the meat industry has to care for the animals more, their costs will go up, so will the cost of meat, reducing how much meat is consumed and therefore reducing the number of animals suffering.
I guess what I'm saying is that we can only get this far ethically (educating people), but we can get further by using how economy works to our advantage.
Well, didn't mean for this to be that long, but it's hard to stop!
Comment by mauro on February 29, 2012 at 2:32pm haha no they don considered human castration that only my misanthropic opinion..i agree with what you say,but natural resources are been exploted, consume and destroyed mainly by human race,..yeah balance is the key i guess, but since we think the planet earth is ours that balance is far from achieving...this discussion may not arrive to no port, i was only throwing ideas to the air like King Crimson once sang.."i talk to the wind"...regards Matteo
Comment by Matteo Grilli on February 29, 2012 at 2:04pm We should not generalize, many human populations are or were well able to live in a good balance with the environment so why castration? Modern western society is certainly not sustainable. I guess human castration is an easy way, it is obviously more challanging to find a way for a better, more equal and fairer distribution of wealth and a sustainable use of natural resources. I'm curious to read where in hsi.org human castration is considered a good thing, will you send me the link please? Thank you Mauro.
Comment by mauro on February 29, 2012 at 2:26am well,a lot of people think that way.....http://www.hsi.org/....i personally disagree with that method...that is like blame other animals and not US....humans should be castrated instead...the plague of all plagues...
Comment by Matteo Grilli on February 29, 2012 at 2:14am Well.. I don't think castration is an option.. who would want that on him/herself ? There must be another solution to live peacefully altogether.
Comment by mauro on February 28, 2012 at 6:00pm you know what other creature is overpopulating? human race,...so we should castrate humans for the good of ALL other creatures.
