Vegan Around the World Network

Inspiring vegan & eco travel and promoting & encouraging local vegan movements

Welcome to Vegan Around the World! What's your vegan story?

Hi! My name is Feather Ives, and I'm the creator of Vegan Around the World! I started this site and the Vegan Around the World blog out of my desire to understand other cultures and their approach to veganism and all that it encompasses -  animal rights, environmental consciousness, better health, etc.

I'd like to hear your stories. What's it like to be vegan in Rio? Jakarta? Dublin? Texas? What's it like to be vegan in your city or country?

Vegans, vegetarians and raw foodists have come a long way, but we've still got a way to go with bringing awareness to the vegan lifestyle. We should all be happy with the fact that we're doing our part and always strive to do more by staying educated, educating others without judgment, staying focused with a positive message and always doing our best.

Welcome to Vegan Around the World!

Hello, I'm new here! I appreciate. We need more unity! I mean those who love mother earth! :-)
hi. i live in japan.
it's quite difficult to be vegan in japan, especially in local areas.
in tokyo, we can find some nice vegan cafes and restaurants.
but in nagoya, where i live, we can hardly find them for vegans.
so i cook and eat vegan food at home but when i eat out with
friends, i sometimes have fish and dairy products.
i hope there will be more places where we can have vegan food
in nagoya, too!
also the word "vegan" is not popular in japan.
many people have never heard of the word "vegan" and don't know that
there are several kinds in vegetarians.
people believe that they need to eat meat to stay healthy. so when i say
that i never eat meat, they become worried about me.
Kumi this is very similar to how it was where i live in California, USA too about fifteen years ago. The word "vegan" is not very popular here now and it's seen as being elitist or something only rich people can be or crazy environmental extremists. As long as we keep being positive and exposing our friends, we'll help spread the word. People used to worry about me too. They used to think I'd be sick. I've not been sick since I stopped eating dairy and most people I know who eat meat and dairy still have allergies and colds all the time. I haven't eaten red meat, chicken or pork in 19 years. I gave up fish when I became vegan 16 months ago. I've never felt better. The dairy had to go and it's the best decision I made.
I'm from Iran. It's not popular in my country too but we have comunities and restaurants we share our belives in but this is trure that we are not much but we're growing. This beautiful planet needs us to insist on not eating meat in no circumstances! :-) This way you can change your friends too.

Hi, I'm Ziba, from Iran. It's about 2 years and 3 monthes that I dont eat meat. I decided to be vegan after 9 monthes of being vegetarian.
At the begining I saw Supreme Master Tv and I informed about cruelty to animals and bad effects of meat industries, as well as meat eating's harms to our body and spiritual life.
And Thanks God that I AM a VEGAN now and I don't participate in that cruelties to animals and environment and ourselves.
Also, It's nice to me that I could know about vegans in other countries.
In Iran, veganism is promoting by NGOs and other nongovernmental groups. we have www.veganforum.ir and www.phce.org and some wegan weblogs and sites to encourage people to being vegan and informing them about Global Warmin issue.
We're a new generation that trying our best to improve our cuture and people's awarness in environmental and vegan aspects. We are facing lots of wrong cultures and belives but trying to go throgh it and do our best.

I tried to explain my inspirations and our situation in Iran as a vegan.
Hope we all vegans around the world could make a new movement to have a vegan world SOON.
Hi,Im from Iran...Its great to find vegan buddies around the globe!
As a matter of fact,I've been concerning about animals, plants, trees & nature from a very young of age...Nature & environment is my favorite and I call it "My Eternal Love"...
I've been about 5 years vegetarian which about 2 years of it as "Lacto-Vegetarian" & approximatelty 1 year vegan.
I believe,we,humanbeings essentialy & naturalty adopted as fruitarians,So we dont need animal products at all.
Its our duty to quit bad habits like consuming meat & animal products, for our planet, ourselves, other "earthlings" ,... .
Lets make it toghether!;)
Besides as Ziba & Benoni said(by the way they r my dear friends here!;)) Here we got the same prb. which U may gotta deal in Ur country!...But there's hope always & I believe:
"All the darkness in the world can not put out the light of one candle."
Aryans abstain of eating meat. Before Islam coming, Zoroaster promotes veganism in Iran as God messenger. He institution three rules:
Good behaviour, good thought, good saying .

He said to his followers that they mustn't kill poor animals, because they are God creature and he know killing objectionable.

We can read from Avesta (holy book of Zoroaster) that the first job of humans was farming, and so neat feed was vegetables and fruit that gave to mans by earth.

Accursed anyone who kill animals (Avesta)

We can read also in Dabestan book:
"But God man's never eat meat because it isn't a human kind character, and whenever you killed an animal for your nourishment, your will going to be voracity"

We have several poems about animal's right and the human behaviour, sa’di and molana are two poets; for example:

"I heard a man survived a sheep from wolf hunting, But at the night he took knife on sheep neck, The soul of sheep became sad and said: Although you released me from wolf teeth but I saw that you are my killer!"

If humankind wants to reach evolution, it must be in a natural environment with natural food.

That's beautiful. What a great theology! We need more of that kind of thinking in the world over the predominate 'man takes all' mentality. Peace!
Dear Hamed, Dear Ione, Dear Ziba

I am studying Islamic Sciences in Berlin, Germany, and thought about to write my Bachelor thesis in an animal rights topic. Unfortunately there are not that much scientific literature on it and I don't want to write about fatwas for slaughter rules on animals and the kind. So I almost give up the idea and started to search for another topic. But now I heard about a small faith community in Iran that lives vegan, at least concerning nutrition. I tried to find out more about them, but didn't succeed. I only found youtube-links that promote the iranian natural nutrition society, some little remarks without concrete sources and the informations that you, Hamed, also blogged in here. That isn't sufficient for a Bachelor thesis. I need more or less scientific or theological or juristical sources, remarks from or on Islamic scholars and the kind. I sadly can't read Farsi, but Arabic, Turkish, Englisch, French and German. Do you know where I can get more information about the vegan faith community in Iran or an animal rights topic concerning Islam/muslim communities?

Thanx, and all the best
Jessi
Let me share the secret story of my veganism! Some months ago when I was reading about my favorite actress Nataly Portman (If I'm not mistaken) and the reason she shifted from years being vegetarian to Vegan life style, It was so far from me. I said "what's vegan?" I read about it but It didn't push me to change my life. The day I lost my best friend I don't know howbut I found myself in a big change! I was almost semivegetarian. For so many years but I had never felt the duty veggies feel. That accident opened my mind! And now, It's really hard to see what I've done but I've changed. I'm someone else now! :-)
Happy to see Lone Wolf, Hamed and Ziba hear!
Hi Benoni, thank you for sharing this. What happened to your friend though?
