Inspiring vegan & eco travel and promoting & encouraging local vegan movements

Its always been a big challenge for me!...Espesially since I adopt a persian cat!

You know,U gotta feed 'em meat anyway, they r carnivore & need to get some Amino-acides via meat!...& its horrible to buy, clean, wash, split ,... the meat or chicken or fish for your cat/dog as a vegan!

besides they can not live & hunt for their own naturally!

Moreover you can not give 'em dry foods all the time : Its harmfull for their urinary system, especially for males!

So what is your suggestion for that?...& what do you choose for your own pet,if you've got one?!

As far as I know, cats are carnivore, dogs are omnivore. I have a vegan dog, I give her "YARRAH organic vegetarian dog food" (it's called vegetarian but at least its completely vegan, anti-allergic, not tested on animals and doesn't contain chemical aromatic substances, colourings or flavourings). She likes it and is a bundle of energy at its best health. She runs faster than any other dog we meet and most people are just amazed how agile she is ;)

As for meat-containing petfood, I heared of big companies that dispose of laboratory-animals through the "petfood". Because "Meat" and other unspecified ingredients don't tell you where it comes from and what it was before. "Meat" is often chicken-feet or peckers, or - other cats and dogs. The "grain" can also be crushed peanut-shells, completely useless for the body of your pet, cheap and lucrative.
So the companies can even make money with their waste.
Humans often just think about how to make the most money with the least effort. Thats the big problem in this world: greed.

Hope this helps :)
very interesting thank you

Early last year we adopted a second dog and she's also vegan and on perfect health :)

i have the same concern.
especially, after i read Jane's reply, i'm worried about my cats now.
about the same time i stopped eating meat, i found a book on vegan pet food.
the book tells how to cook vegan food for cats, so i tried it.
but all of my cats didn't like and never ate them.
so i just gave up and have been feeding them ordinary cat food.
i wish there are "organic vegetarian/vegan cat food", which my cats would love to eat!
I even heared that pets become "addicted" to the ordinary food, because of some chemical additives contained.
Don't think that any pet ever starved in front of a full dish, so maybe you can try again with different brands and recipes (at start you can mix the vegan food with the "old" and heighten the amount day-by-day until its completely vegan) and give the little tigers some time to adapt :)

As for catfood, I know:
- Benevo duo (for cats and dogs)
- vegusto cat
- amicat

(remember I'm german and have a dog, so maybe there are more I don't know *g*)

I also knew someone who feeds his dog "containered" (also called "freegan") dog-food, so at least he doesn't support this cruel industry.
Interesting, this topic. I also am interested in learning more about my dog's being "addicted to meat" I buy the best stuff that I can for mine (meat in a can/non-animal tested) and I add veggies & fruits to it. Apple sauce, blueberries, sweet potatoes, peas,.. apple slices, carrot slices etc.. and add a small amount of canned dog food meat to it.. for flavour. They will eat the sweet potatoes and everything else, without the canned meat tho. I give them a vitamin once in a while. So I think it can be done. I don't believe in giving my dog's dry dog food from a bag.. (it's not natural for them to eat this) so I do the best I can. Both dogs love tofu, and will eat it whenever they are given it. They will also eat soy cheese.. so sometimes they get a slice here and there. They are a bundle of love & energy. I'd love to get them off the meat part of their diet, as long as I dont' have to settle for the dry. They won't eat it now having had this diet of fresh foods and veggies. I used to feed them wellness dog food. (not vegan, but does have all kinds of veggies in it.)
We have several cats and a dog. The dog only eats vegan food ( a lot of recipes I got from http://www.yummyfordogs.org).
Cats are difficult creatures when it comes to food. Two of the cats like seitan (which I make myself from plain flour) and one cat loves tofu, the others get fish (I know, not a good solution, but at least not bloody meat).
Fish is a meat...

...

On the subject of feeding carnivore animals vegan diets, personally I have no problem with it as long as you know what you're doing and you've researched it thoroughly - particularly for cats.
Actually after a couple days of not eating a cat can literally starve itself to death. Even a very healthy cat. Cats systems are very picky when it comes to not taking in food and can literally start shutting down in as little as a day or two from not eating because their metabolic rate is so fast and toxins can build up in their systems.

Example:
One of our cats had swallowed a metallic ring and had ripped and blocked her intestines. We had it removed but she almost died not from the surgery but from not eating. We had to tube feed her for a while or she would have starved her self to death. She had thrown up so much before the surgery she was afraid to eat.

Anyways, Ask you vets how fast a cat can go down hill without eating. You will be surprised.
I have a cat and I love her dearly, but I don't love feeding her! I bought some vegan cat food from http://veggiepets.com/ but she won't eat it - she is very fussy! When feeding a cat veggie, is is vitally important that they get a source of taurine (comes from meat, but vegan pet food contains a synthetic version). Good luck with your veggie pets! x
I've had cats fed only on dry food that were healthy and happy one living for 22years the other for 19 years, (both really long time for cats, especially siamese!) also had several ferrets over the years and they ate the dry cat food biscuits supplimented by fresh road kill when I found it that although wasnt plesant handling I saw more as recycling a wasted life rather than letting it waste on the road side, usually I found a fresh pheasant/rabbit/pigeon etc at least once a month and the ferrets were also really happy and healthy with good longevity. I wouldnt buy wet animal feeds as they smell so bad and often arnt good quality in meat quality, slaughter etc. the cat often caught their own suppliments mice birds etc. (just one out of millions of reasons why cats are better than dogs is their independance and self sufficency!) I know vegans who have vegan dogs and Im not sure I agree with it as they are carniviores but its a bit of catch22/hipocracy if you feel for animals and live a lifestyle enjoy the company of your animals and want whats best for them, but when their natural requirements differ from your ethics where do you drawn the line, animals dogs cats ferrets etc. can certainly live as vegans as i've experianced 1st and 2nd hand but if theres a possibility at putting animals at risk...dom
Dogs aren't true carnivores. I've read all about this & been schooled on it. Even Coyotes aren't true 100% carnivores, they will eat fruits & veggies, if they can't find a meat source/need veggies in their diet too. I used to see seeds & reminents of vegetable matter in coyote poop all the time.. so this is a valid first hand claim. Sure, they need meat, but not as much as we like to think they do. Veterinarians know absolutely O on food types & kinds to feed pets. Since they do O schooling on diet and nutrition for pets. I research everything I do, so I did look up the company and what kind of meats they use. Sure they could be outright lying.. I won't feed a dog dry dog food tho, it's not natural food for them that they would be eating in nature, but neither is a trash bin or the food found in it and my dog did eat from one at one time in his life as a stray. I think all we can do it do the best we can do for ourselves & our pets. Veganism isn't perfect. You cannot (at this point) not affect an animal's life in some way or form, when eating/living. All you can do is do the best you can do. :)
