Vegan Around the World Network

Inspiring vegan & eco travel and promoting & encouraging local vegan movements

Hi!

I know that all of you love animals and try as best as possible to save their lives.

What about insects?
Sadly there are insects that could be annoying... :(

It's summer time in Korea and there are a lot of mosquitoes!
And sometimes I see a lot of ants in the kitchen!

I used to just kill them easily but since I've become a vegan, it makes me think that whether I have the right to kill them or not. To be honest... they are just annoying and I don't think I will ever be able to love mosquitoes.. :(

What do you do with those annoying insects??

I don't think you're crazy. Toads are so lovely and fascinating. As a child I was already member of a german ecology group with my family and built protective fences for toads on roadsides with my dad and brother.

Once in a while you can even see roadsigns like these in Germany:

I appreciate that you stop for toads! Keep it up :)

Hey! Thanks. I don't think your toads are like ours.

Ours are introduced species from South America that have killed hundreds of native frog species and are poisonous for birds and fish to eat, so they are killing lots of those species too.

Ours are nasty! But even still, I didn't have the heart to flatten him. Haha.

Thanks for the link! Very interesting!

Pragmatically seen: Humans alltogether (I mean the human overpopulation) are also a gigantic pest on this planet. If not the worst. I also don't kill them ;)

Well, I am mostly in agreement with what has been said here, with a few exceptions. I never intentionally kill insects, and in fact go out of my way NOT to. I used to get teased as a kid for walking around an ant and some kids were particularly cruel and would step on beetles, caterpillars, etc. right in front of me to get me upset. It still upsets me to think about!  But, in the case of stinging insects, I admit that I do kill them.  Not the random bee flying about, but if I have a hornets neston on my house or in my yard, I don't know of any other choice than to destroy it. (I'm open to suggestions, though!) Both my dog and my sister are violently allergic to these stings, so I feel the need to protect them rather than rush them to emergency care.  The other insects I have no problem killing are mosquitos and ticks. Both carry serious diseases, such as lime disease or West Nile. I don't go around  killing them for sport or no reason, but if there is a tick crawling on me, I'm sorry, it's days are numbered.  The same with a mosquito. I don't trap them or poison them, but if they're on me, then that's too much! Geez, my first post ever on this site, and I'm afraid I'm coming off as cold-hearted.
